Our Oceans are Turning into Plastic ... Are We?

This article about plastic and its affects on the environment and our own health is shocking. It's long, but very interesting. Makes me want to buy fewer plastic items, reuse grocery bags or ask for paper, and be less careless about "replacing" things that still have life left in them. Thoughts?

Well ~ my first thought is that I was always of the understanding that when you recycle plastic it goes to the proper location marked on inside the Triangle ~ and am amazed that basically only the 1 and 2 are really worthy of recycle. I am also amazed that only about 5% of all plastic is ever recycled and the rest end up in a landfill. Pretty doggone disturbing isn't it?

I recycle as much as I possibly can, but it's disheartening to know that it isn't a total solution.

I was just sitting here brainstorming ways to AVOID consuming plastic -- e.g., using Borax detergent (in a cardboard box) rather than Tide in plastic, and using dryer sheets (again, in a cardboard box) rather than Downy in plastic. But when it comes to things like milk and ketchup, it's tough. I'm not sure I could FIND those in glass anymore.

The other thing that bothers me is all of Katie's plastic toys. When I see them laying around the house, I often think about how "eternal" they are, and how she is just one of 80 gazillion kids, each of whom has a jillion toys. (Those are official statistics, by the way.)

In all seriousnes, it's very, very scary stuff.
